September at MDC: Performances, Residencies and a New Open Call

From video and exhibition to contemporary circus, dance performances, work in progress and a residency process, September is a busy month at the Mediterranean Dance Center! Coming to San Vincenti are Bosnian-Herzegovinian artist based in New York Selma Selman, Slovenian duo Fabla Collective, Slovenian artist based in the Netherlands Nik Rajšek, and Nigerian-Irish choreographer and performer Mufutau Yusuf.

 

The programme begins on 1 September at 7 pm with Selma Selman’s CROSSING THE BLUE BRIDGE, presented in collaboration with Avanti!. The video work draws on the story of Selman’s family and the women who crossed the Blue Bridge in Bihać every day to collect and sell scrap metal, connecting personal and family history with questions of labour, gender and the social position of Roma people.

On 11 September, we present two works at MDC. At 7 pm, Fabla Collective performs Do Birds Dream of Flying?, a contemporary circus performance selected for Aerowaves Twenty26. Through movement and a specially designed scenographic object, a rotating and swinging ladder that opens up an aerial space otherwise inaccessible to the human body, Inan Sven Du Swami and Mojca Špik explore balance, freedom and limitation, as well as the relationship between body and object.
At 8 pm, Nik Rajšek presents LOSER, a work in progress developed through an artistic exploration of decay, loss of control and transformation using movement, voice, live sound and video. The audience will have an opportunity to encounter part of the development process of a multidisciplinary solo conceived in a durational format.

The programme continues on 19 September with two more performances selected for Aerowaves Twenty26. At 7 pm, Mufutau Yusuf performs PROSES ON NEITHER HERE NOR THERE, a meditative solo that uses the body and dance to reflect on the fragility and transience of human life, what we leave behind and the legacies we create. Set against a backdrop of global unrest, the work engages with mortality, decay, transformation and renewal, approaching death as an integral part of existence and the cycles of the natural world.
At 8 pm, Nik Rajšek performs KINK, a solo about control, the desire for it, resistance to it and its loss. Body, movement and music create a constant tension between domination and surrender, while the act of being watched becomes part of a provocative dynamic between performer and audience.

Mufutau Yusuf will also be in residence at MDC, where he will develop his new project TO VENERATE THE SIMPLE DAYS. His stay thus connects the performance and residency strands of the programme, bringing together the presentation of an existing work with the space and time to develop a new one.

A new Open Call for Artistic Residencies at MDC in 2027 has also been launched. The call is intended for dance artists and collectives looking for time and space to develop new projects, continue working on existing projects, or pursue artistic research.
