VR performances weekend!

At the Mediterranean Dance Center on November 8 and 9, we once again present performances in virtual reality (VR)!
Starting at 19:00, on Friday 8.11 you can watch The Ephemeral Life of an Octopus by Lea Tirabasso, and on Saturday 9.11 Masterwork by Emese Cuhorka & Csaba Molnár.
The Virtual Reality Weekend in Svetvinčenat brings two works that were in different years selected among the Top 20 by Aerowaves, the largest European dance network. The performances were recorded in a special technique that allows audiences, through VR headsets, to experience them as if live, within the Springback Ringside project. Producer and director of the VR versions is Enya Belak, with filming and editing by Igor Crnković of Rijeka-based Pilot Media. The production center of this pioneering virtual reality project is the Croatian Cultural Centre on Sušak, one of the network partners. The project aims to bring dance to places and communities where it has not yet been seen, and in the case of the Mediterranean Dance Center, into a space still waiting for adequate technical and financial conditions to host a continuous performance program.
These VR performances are an excellent opportunity for contemporary dance lovers to enjoy during the winter months. The program is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media as part of its audience development initiatives.

Saturday, 9.11.2024 at 19:00 – Masterwork
THE EPHEMERAL LIFE OF AN OCTOPUS
The Ephemeral Life of an Octopus questions the strangeness of having a body: powerful, perforated, examined, and animal. The piece is inspired by studies of the evolution of cancer cells and the lived experience of illness. At once scientific, philosophical, and visceral, Lea Tirabasso’s work looks at dysfunction, chaos, and the vibrant life force of the body inside and out.
“There is an ancient, religious idea that man is an unhappy compound of beast and god: if we were only divine, we would be freed, immortal spirit; if we were only beasts, we might be content in our instinctive ignorance.”

MASTERWORK
Cultural references and whimsical movements lie at the heart of Masterwork by Emese Cuhorka and Csaba Molnár. Unfolding through a series of vignettes, this duet explores how the body sheds cultural meanings and symbols projected onto it over time. Using objects as costumes that block movement, the body reshapes its autonomy amid functional obstacles. Every body is a masterpiece in itself, created out of itself and its surroundings. By modifying the body, Cuhorka and Molnár manipulate the environment and evoke the freedom of redefining.
