In October, choreographer Lara Vejrup Ostan comes to the Mediterranean Dance Center with dancer Ella Östlund and musician Moritz Nahold to continue working on GRAYSCALE, a new chapter in her long-term choreographic research into roads, driving, transportation and labour.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
GRAYSCALE takes the infrastructure of roads and everything that moves along them as its starting point: people, materials, information and goods. Rather than seeing the road simply as a physical surface, the project approaches it as a system made up of multiple layers, from gravel and bitumen, construction workers and everyday traffic to public funding, bureaucracy and corruption.
Fog, peripheries, ring roads, grey(s), disorientation and reorientation are some of the key words in the current research. The project moves between large-scale systems that determine how and where we move and very concrete details, such as a crack in the asphalt next to a petrol station.
GRAYSCALE continues the research Ostan developed through All these roads just for you, DRIVER Vol 1 – White Line Fever and DRIVER Vol 2 – Before Lunch, exploring driving and the work of truck drivers, as well as questions of acceleration, movement and orientation.

TEAM
Lara Vejrup Ostan is a choreographer and artist whose work explores how capitalist logics shape space, time and the body. She approaches choreography and dance as sociopolitical practices, developing works through distinctive movement languages, humour, emotional entanglement and meticulous detail.
She works across a range of performance formats, from performances in theatre spaces and performances for three audience members in a car to a book as a dance performance and performance lectures. Her projects take specific subjects and contexts as their starting points: roads, driving and truck drivers in DRIVER Vol I and DRIVER Vol II; migration, digestion and agricultural workers in Wait, wait, (tomato); and air conditioning, air and bureaucracy in AIRCON.
She holds a BFA in Dance and Choreography from the Danish National School of Performing Arts, where she also completed an MFA in Choreography in 2026. She has also completed the Enhanced Practice programme at the International Center for Knowledge in the Arts in Copenhagen and trained as a Somatic Movement Educator in Body-Mind Centering® at Leben Nuova in Italy.

Ella Östlund (2000) is a Swedish dancer and dance artist working between Copenhagen and Stockholm. She graduated with a BFA in Dance and Choreography from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in 2022. Her artistic practice is grounded in an interest in the materialities of performance and where they meet dance’s circulation and production of meaning.

Moritz Nahold is a musician who has worked on solo and collaborative projects in dance, performance, theatre and installation since 2017. He has collaborated with artists and collectives including Yein Lee, ZAK, God’s Entertainment, Valentino Skarwan, Daniela Georgieva, Lara Ostan, Simon Mayer and Peter Kutin. His work has been presented at Tanzquartier Wien, Dansehallerne, Centre d’Art La Meute, Brut Wien, Artefact Singapore, CPH Stage, the Danish National School of Performing Arts, Theater in der Josefstadt, ImPulsTanz, Ravnedans, Heart of Noise, Elevate and Hyperreality.
