July Open-Air Program – Contemporary Dance in the Heart of Savičenta

San Vincenti (Svetvinčenat) and contemporary dance have been deeply connected for decades. This July, the Mediterranean Dance Centre continues to build on that connection – outside the framework of a festival, but with the same goal: to offer audiences a compelling performance program in unique outdoor settings. Today, MPC is the central meeting point for contemporary dance in Istria – with residencies, educational activities, and performances throughout the year.

On Friday, July 18th, the audience is invited to two open-air performances. On the main square in Svetvinčenat, Waterkind will be performed – a duet by Swedish authors Joanna Holewa Chrona and Yared Tilahun Cederlund, working under the name Land Before Time. Through physical presence, contact, and a carefully composed movement structure, the piece explores themes of touch, vulnerability, and mutual trust. It is part of the Aerowaves Twenty25 selection, highlighting twenty of the most promising works on the European dance scene.

Later that evening, within the walls of Grimani Castle, Blue Carousel will be presented – a piece by the Norwegian-Canadian duo Lisa Colette Bysheim and Katrine Patry. This satirical work examines the roles and expectations surrounding the female body, relying on choreographic tools such as repetition and exaggeration. The performance features a live techno set by the DJ duo asiangirlsonly, and is performed by Lisa Colette Bysheim and Edith Strand Askeland. Also part of the Aerowaves Twenty25 selection, this guest performance is supported by Performing Arts Hub Norway (PAHN).

On Saturday, July 19th, the program at Grimani Castle concludes with NON+ULTRAS by choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak – a piece that uses visual codes of sport, populism, and digital culture to reveal layers of identity and belonging in today’s society. The performance’s intensity and choreographic precision make it a powerful conclusion to MPC’s July program.

In addition to performances, July at MPC also includes a series of workshops – including activities held as part of the international project D. Dance Alliance, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
